2025 GWB Toll Archive FAQ

What was the 2025 George Washington Bridge toll for a car?

From 5 January 2025 the GWB passenger-car toll was $16.06 with E-ZPass during peak hours and $14.06 with E-ZPass off-peak. Toll-by-Mail started the year at $18.31, then rose to $22.38 on 6 July 2025, the same date a new Mid-Tier rate of $18.72 launched for E-ZPass tags on NY/NJ accounts that were read via plate match rather than transponder. This 2025 schedule was superseded by the 4 January 2026 tariff, which raised the car rates to $16.79 peak, $14.79 off-peak, $19.55 Mid-Tier, and $23.30 Toll-by-Mail.

When did the 2025 tariff end?

The 2025 tariff was in effect from 5 January 2025 through 3 January 2026. The new tariff that replaced it took effect 4 January 2026 and remains in force. The December 2024 PANYNJ board action that set the 2025 schedule also approved annual 25-cent increments (on top of the automatic CPI adjustment) for 2026 through 2028, and a phase-out of the off-peak discount scheduled for 2027 through 2030.

Why was the Mid-Tier rate introduced mid-year in 2025?

PANYNJ data indicated that roughly 9% of E-ZPass transactions were being read by license-plate cameras rather than by transponder, typically because the tag was improperly mounted, shielded, or low on battery. Those crossings were defaulting to the full Toll-by-Mail rate even though the driver had a valid E-ZPass account. The Mid-Tier rate ($18.72 for cars in 2025) was introduced 6 July 2025 as a middle ground: drivers with NY/NJ E-ZPass accounts whose tags weren't read get a discount on the Toll-by-Mail rate, but still pay more than the proper E-ZPass rate. The 2026 tariff raised it to $19.55.

I crossed the GWB in 2025 and just got a bill, does the 2025 rate still apply?

Yes. PANYNJ bills the rate that was in effect on the crossing date, not the bill date. For a car crossing before 6 July 2025, Toll-by-Mail is $18.31; from 6 July 2025 through 3 January 2026 it is $22.38 (or $18.72 Mid-Tier if your E-ZPass tag was read via plate match). If you got a bill for a 2026 crossing, the 2026 rates apply. Late-payment penalties accrue on the original rate, not at the new tariff level.
