Why Eastbound Only?
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey adopted one-way toll collection at every interstate crossing in 1970. Before then, tolls were collected in both directions at half the per-trip rate. Switching to a single direction at full rate cut toll plaza traffic in half and reduced congestion at the bottleneck without changing the revenue collected by the agency.
Every PANYNJ bridge and tunnel between New York and New Jersey uses the same eastbound-only system: the GWB, the Lincoln Tunnel, the Holland Tunnel, the Bayonne Bridge, the Goethals Bridge, and the Outerbridge Crossing. If you cross any of these westbound into New Jersey, you cross free.
Eastbound Toll Plazas
The GWB is fully cashless. There are no physical toll booths on either the upper or lower level. As you cross eastbound, overhead gantries near the New York anchorage either read your E-ZPass transponder electronically or photograph your license plate for Toll-by-Mail billing.
The toll gantry is positioned on the New York side of the bridge, after the deck transitions from the New Jersey approach to the New York span. There is no opportunity to avoid the toll once you have committed to the eastbound crossing.
Eastbound Approach Routes from New Jersey
The most common eastbound approaches to the GWB are: Interstate 95 northbound from southern New Jersey; Interstate 80 eastbound from western New Jersey; US Route 46 eastbound through Bergen County; and the Palisades Interstate Parkway southbound. Each merges onto the GWB approach in Fort Lee.
The eastbound approach has separate lanes for the upper level (cars only) and lower level (cars and trucks up to a height limit). Signage on the New Jersey side directs you to your level. The toll is identical regardless of which level you use. See upper vs lower level details.
Eastbound Traffic Patterns
Eastbound congestion is heaviest weekday mornings from 7:00 AM to 9:30 AM as commuters head into Manhattan. The afternoon eastbound peak is lighter, since most commuters are travelling westbound out of the city. Friday evenings can see eastbound delays as weekend travellers head into the city.
Saturday and Sunday eastbound traffic builds gradually through the morning, peaking around 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM with leisure and shopping trips. Weekend eastbound crossings cost the off-peak E-ZPass rate of $14.79 for cars.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the George Washington Bridge toll only eastbound?
Yes. The George Washington Bridge toll is collected one way only, eastbound into New York. The eastbound passenger car toll is $16.79 with E-ZPass during peak hours, $14.79 with E-ZPass off-peak, and $23.30 via Toll-by-Mail. Westbound (into New Jersey) is free for every vehicle class at all times. Tariff effective 4 January 2026.
Why is the GWB toll eastbound only?
All Port Authority of NY and NJ interstate crossings switched to one-way toll collection in 1970. Charging the full toll in one direction at twice the rate halved the number of vehicles passing toll plazas, cutting congestion by roughly half. Every PANYNJ bridge and tunnel between New York and New Jersey (Lincoln Tunnel, Holland Tunnel, Bayonne Bridge, Goethals Bridge, Outerbridge Crossing) follows the same eastbound-only system.
Do I pay the toll if I enter the GWB from the Henry Hudson Parkway?
Only if you cross the bridge eastbound (which is the natural direction toward New Jersey from Manhattan, but the bridge geometry means Henry Hudson Parkway joins the GWB westbound). If you join the bridge and end up travelling westbound into New Jersey, there is no toll. If you reverse and head eastbound back into Manhattan, you pay the eastbound toll.
Are eastbound peak hours different from westbound?
Westbound has no toll, so peak/off-peak does not apply. Eastbound peak hours are weekdays 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. All other times (including weekends and holidays) are off-peak, saving $2.00 per passenger car crossing with E-ZPass.
What is the eastbound toll for a truck?
Eastbound truck tolls at the Jan 2026 tariff are: 2-axle small truck $45.34 peak / $43.34 off-peak / $51.34 by mail; 3-axle $68.01 / $65.01 / $77.01; 4-axle $90.68 / $86.68 / $102.68; 5-axle $113.35 / $108.35 / $128.35; 6+ axle $136.02 / $130.02 / $154.02. Each additional axle above 6 adds another tier.
