GWB Westbound Is Free

The George Washington Bridge collects tolls in one direction only: eastbound, into New York. Westbound, into New Jersey, is free for every vehicle. Driving from New York to Newark Airport via the GWB costs nothing at the bridge itself.

This makes the GWB an attractive route to Newark Airport from upper Manhattan, the Bronx, or Westchester. The same is true of the Lincoln Tunnel and Holland Tunnel (also free westbound), but the GWB has better highway connections to the NJ Turnpike at exit 73.

The NJ Turnpike Segment

From the GWB westbound exit, you enter the New Jersey Turnpike at exit 73 northbound, then immediately need to head south on the Turnpike to reach Newark Airport at exit 14. The Turnpike charges by entry/exit pair and time of day. A typical passenger car with E-ZPass pays approximately $4.00 peak / $3.50 off-peak for the exit 73 to exit 14 segment.

Exit 14 has its own NJ Turnpike connector to Newark Liberty International Airport. The connector is short and toll-free; the airport terminals themselves have no entry tolls.

Alternative Routes Without the GWB

If you are coming from lower Manhattan, the Holland Tunnel offers a more direct route to Newark Airport. The Holland Tunnel eastbound (into NY) costs $16.79 E-ZPass peak; westbound (into NJ) is free. From the Holland Tunnel westbound, take Interstate 78 west to the NJ Turnpike, then south to exit 14. This route is about 8 miles shorter from lower Manhattan than the GWB route.

The Lincoln Tunnel is a third option, mid-Manhattan-based. Same rate structure (free westbound). The Lincoln Tunnel connects via the NJ Turnpike Extension and the main NJ Turnpike to Newark Airport.

Return Trip: Newark Airport to New York

Returning from Newark Airport to New York is more expensive than the outbound trip because the GWB charges eastbound. From the airport, take the NJ Turnpike north from exit 14 to exit 73 (~$4.00 E-ZPass car peak), then the GWB eastbound ($16.79 E-ZPass car peak). Total round trip via GWB: approximately $24.79 ($4.00 outbound + $20.79 return) for a passenger car E-ZPass peak.

Off-peak round trip: approximately $22.79 ($3.50 + $4.00 + $14.79 GWB off-peak). Toll-by-Mail round trip is significantly higher at approximately $31.30 (NJ Turnpike adds an admin fee for plate-based billing).
