NJ E-ZPass at the GWB
New Jersey E-ZPass holders pay the standard Port Authority E-ZPass rate. The tag is read at the same toll gantry that reads NY E-ZPass and out-of-state E-ZPass tags. The per-crossing rate is identical regardless of issuing agency: $16.79 for cars during peak hours, $14.79 off-peak, $19.55 if the tag reads via plate match (Mid-Tier), and $23.30 via Toll-by-Mail if the tag fails to read at all.
NJ E-ZPass is operated by the New Jersey Turnpike Authority. The agency manages account billing, replenishment, and customer service. Your NJ E-ZPass account is debited each time you cross the GWB, the NJ Turnpike, the Garden State Parkway, or any other E-ZPass facility.
Mid-Tier Rate for NJ Tags
The $19.55 Mid-Tier rate (effective 6 July 2025) applies specifically to NY and NJ E-ZPass tags when the tag is improperly positioned and the toll is billed via license plate match instead of transponder read. Approximately 9% of NY and NJ E-ZPass transactions at the GWB fall into this Mid-Tier category.
If you receive a $19.55 Mid-Tier charge instead of the expected $14.79 or $16.79, your transponder is not being read correctly. The fix is to remount it on the inside of the windshield (behind the rearview mirror) with the adhesive strips provided. Out-of-state E-ZPass tags do not have a Mid-Tier rate and continue to pay either the full E-ZPass rate (if read) or Toll-by-Mail ($23.30 for cars) if not.
How to Sign Up for NJ E-ZPass
Visit ezpassnj.com to enrol online. You will provide vehicle information, payment details for automatic balance replenishment, and a minimum prepaid balance ($25 for personal accounts). The transponder arrives by mail in 5 to 7 business days.
Prepaid tags are also available at retail locations (Walgreens, CVS, ShopRite) throughout New Jersey and the NY metro area. Buy the tag, activate it online, link a payment method, and start using it immediately. This option suits drivers who need the tag the same day.
NJ E-ZPass Commuter Plans (NJ Turnpike Only)
NJ E-ZPass offers commuter discount plans on the NJ Turnpike (NJTA toll roads) for frequent users. These plans do not apply to the George Washington Bridge or any other Port Authority crossing. The GWB rate is uniform $16.79 peak for all car E-ZPass holders regardless of which agency issued the tag and regardless of how often you cross.
Annual Cost for NJ Commuters
A NJ resident commuting daily to Manhattan via the GWB pays the eastbound toll once per workday. At 10 crossings per week (5 round trips), peak E-ZPass annual cost is $8,731 ($16.79 x 520 crossings). Off-peak crossings (where shift schedule allows) drop this to $7,691 per year.
