Overnight Off-Peak Window

The Port Authority charges the off-peak E-ZPass rate during all overnight hours. On weekdays, the overnight off-peak window starts at 8:00 PM and runs through 6:00 AM the next morning. From 6:00 AM, the weekday morning peak resumes (6 to 10 AM peak, 10 AM to 4 PM off-peak, 4 to 8 PM peak, 8 PM to 6 AM off-peak again).

Weekends have no peak hours at all. Saturday at 2:00 AM, Saturday at 2:00 PM, and Sunday at 4:00 AM are all billed the same off-peak rate.

Why Overnight Crossings Are Faster

Traffic is lightest from approximately 12:00 AM to 5:00 AM. During this window, the GWB typically flows at full speed with no congestion. A crossing that takes 30+ minutes during peak rush hour takes 3 to 5 minutes overnight. The same off-peak toll applies whether you cross at 8:30 PM (still some commuter residue) or 3:30 AM (essentially empty roads).

For long-haul truckers, late-night couriers, and drivers in the gig economy (rideshare, delivery), the overnight window combines the lowest toll rate and the fastest crossing time. The economics favour overnight runs heavily.

Overnight Lane Closures

The Port Authority schedules maintenance and inspection work overnight to minimise impact on commuters. Typical overnight closures reduce the bridge from 14 to 10 or 12 lanes for several hours, usually weeknights 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM. Both eastbound and westbound directions may have closures.

The toll rate does not change during closures. The off-peak $14.79 rate applies regardless of lane availability. If you have a flexible schedule, check the PANYNJ traffic feed (panynj.gov/bridges-tunnels/en/traffic-conditions.html) before an overnight crossing to confirm lane status.

Overnight Approach Routes

Eastbound overnight access to the GWB is via Interstate 95, Interstate 80, US Route 46, or the Palisades Interstate Parkway. All approach roads are typically light-traffic overnight. The toll plaza is on the New York anchorage side.

Westbound overnight is free (no toll). The Trans-Manhattan Expressway connector from the Cross-Bronx Expressway and the Henry Hudson Parkway feeds onto the bridge westbound.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the GWB toll overnight?

Overnight tolls on the George Washington Bridge are charged at the off-peak rate. For a passenger car with E-ZPass, the overnight rate is $14.79 per eastbound crossing. The off-peak overnight window is weekdays 8:00 PM through 6:00 AM the next morning, and continuously through the weekend. Tariff effective 4 January 2026.

When does the overnight off-peak window start?

On weekdays, off-peak begins at 8:00 PM and runs through 6:00 AM the next morning. So a Tuesday crossing at 9:00 PM pays the off-peak rate, and so does a Wednesday crossing at 5:00 AM. The peak window resumes at 6:00 AM weekdays. Weekends are entirely off-peak (no time-of-day boundary).

Is the GWB overnight toll cheaper than the day rate?

Yes, for E-ZPass holders. The overnight E-ZPass rate of $14.79 is $2.00 less than the peak rate of $16.79 for cars. For larger vehicles, the overnight saving is bigger: a 5-axle truck saves $5.00 per crossing overnight ($108.35 vs $113.35). Toll-by-Mail does not have a time-of-day discount, so non-E-ZPass drivers pay $23.30 at all hours.

What is the lowest-traffic time to cross the GWB?

Traffic is lightest from 12:00 AM to 5:00 AM, particularly Sunday night through Thursday night. Crossings during this window typically take just a few minutes with no delay. The toll rate is the same off-peak $14.79 throughout the overnight window, so the only benefit of crossing at 3 AM vs 9 PM is travel time, not cost.

Are GWB lanes closed overnight?

Sometimes. The Port Authority schedules overnight lane closures for maintenance and inspection, typically reducing the bridge from 14 to 10 or 12 lanes for several hours. These closures are usually weeknights 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM. The toll is unchanged during closures. Check the PANYNJ traffic feed or the GWB Twitter/X account before an overnight crossing to confirm lane status.
